Why do we do research and how do we study urban form and urban life?
What is the significance of research to us as urban designers, architects, or simply responsible citizens?
Nowadays, research seems to be easier than ever, as there is a vast amount of information readily available from a wide variety of sources, yet distinguishing a causal collection of information with rigorous research is not as apparent and has become more important. Urban design encompasses a vast field of interdisciplinary knowledge, and the capability to navigate through available resources that inform and support design activities is a valuable and necessary skillset for post-graduate design students.
This course reviews different methods of research in urban design (urbanism and architecture) and discusses the process of conducting qualitative and quantitative research in the area of social science. The goal is to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skillset to understand and apply research in a critical, analytical, and ethical manner. Complementary to the ongoing research for students in developing their thesis project and history/theory essay, this course will guide students through the research process with an active learning approach.
