arch5731A | 2021/22 T1 | elective course for MSUD and MArch students.
This course investigates the role of cultural architecture in urban context, asking the question of how cultural form and practice is situated in the city and affect its development. It will be a dialogue about the two aspects – (1) Cultural Forms (aka architecture), through international and local case study of cultural architecture, seeing them not as an iconic/isolated object but actively engaging with the urban environment; and (2) Cultural Practice, looking at creative works and cultural practice in response to the city, and how the act of culture affects urban space and urban life. The course will be structured around themed lectures, intercept with workshop exercise that builds up to a mapping/survey project to investigate cases of local cultural institutions and their relation to urban form and social life.
